There is a scam where the seller is using Ebay, Craigslist, Cars.com, Autotrader, etc. to sell a vehicle a VERY low price. The seller will list his fax number (first hint of a scam) on the listing so you can’t call. Once you send the seller an e-mail they will reply that the car, boat, jet ski, truck, piano, etc., is still for sell but the seller is currently out of town so he can’t show it to you or that the vehicle is in another state (second hint). The seller tells you to use Ebay, Google Checkout, etc. vehicle protection program and wire mone…(third hint that this is a scam). There is NO vehicle protection program that is going to hold your money while you get a 5-7 day period to have the seller ship you the car and then return it if you don’t like it! The scammer will want you to wire the money, period, he won’t take it anyother way (check, credit card, etc)…this is your biggest hint that it is a scam! DON’T wire money, never, never, never. These scammers will get your money and you will never get the vehicle because there is no real vehicle…they stole the listing from a real seller, lowered the price, changed the email address, and are about to scam you if you fall for it! The scammers will send you an email that looks like it is from Ebay, Google Checkout, etc., but it really isn’t from the real company! Don’t fall for this scam…the email didn’t come from Ebay, nor Google Checkout! Don’t fall for this scam!

Hello,
The price is $5600.
This Jeep is a real ‘head turner’ and it will make you proud, it is in excellent condition, never been involved in accidents, 750 miles, VIN:J6M93EA074927 ,clean and clear title,no mechanical problems,no scratches, flaws or any kind of damage, all functional and it will need nothing in the near future.
I have the Jeep sealed at DAS terminal in Miami, FL ready to be shipped out will take 4-5 days through DAS and it will be free,my previous buyer(his loan did not get approved)already paid for it and DAS didn’t want to refund him the shipping fee. So you will not be charged for shipping!
I cannot meet face2face I have a new job in Tucson, AZ I would like to use Autotrader Vehicle Purchase to take care of this deal, smooth and safe. Let me know if you have any other questions, hope i didn’t miss anything.
More pictures here: http://picasaweb.google.com/107302324070255787430/1976JeepCJCJ7?authkey=Gv1sRgCP_y3KPlyNG3kwE#slideshow/

Thank you, Dennis.

I replied, asked questions and received this, answering none of my questions:

Here is how it works if you have never used Autotrader.
You send me your full name and your shipping address so I can initiate the transaction.Autotrader contacts you with further details regarding the payment and shipping process. You submit the payment to Autotrader, Autotrader confirms the payment and asks me to release the shipment.I ship the vehicle which should be at your door within 5 business days. You have a 3 days inspection period before you confirm the deal and Autotrader forwards the payment to me or you cancel the deal and you get your money back and return the Jeep free of charge.
Basicly Autotrader holds your money safe until you confirm that this car is what you have been expected and you want to buy it. It is not a sight unseen deal.
On the other hand I can ship my car knowing Autotrader has your money and you won’t disappear with my Jeep. We are both covered.Sorry for the long emails I have tried to touch all bases.

Thank you, Dennis.

I’ve seen a few other people who’ve received the same emails word for word.

Hi,
Thanks for being interested in buying my sled! It`s in perfect condition,no scratches, damages and never been implicated in any accidents. It has only 1040 km and the price is $3,200 CAD.Because of my divorce settlement,i own this sled and as a woman i don`t need it so i`m trying to get rid of it as soon as possible(that`s why i`m selling it so cheap). We will use eBay`s Vehicle Purchase Protection plan for our both safety,i want only legit transactions.Let me know where are you located and any other details you need about it.

Have a great day!

Second email reply:

Hi again,
I`m located in Montreal(the sled is here with me) right now because i got a new job here, the thing is i`m very busy and i don`t have time to stay and meet with all my potential buyers, that is why i gave to a shipping company that will ship it to the next owner(on my cost), so i’m trying to sell it online under eBay`s protection. Here is how it works :
The sale will be managed through eBay under their Vehicle Purchase Protection program since they offer the highest rate of safety and reliability during online transactions. They act as a neutral third party.
1. I will contact eBay and give all the info about this deal.
2. They will email us the forms which are needed for our deal(invoice, payment instructions, buyer’s and seller’s protection policy)
3. You will send the money to eBay and they will notify me to ship the sled to your location.
4. After you will inspect the sled and decide to keep it, eBay will forward the funds to me once you have approved them to do so. You will have 5 days to inspect it.
Please reply with your complete name and shipping address in your next email and let me know if you are interested in knowing more details about this purchase so that I can open a transaction at eBay and to move forward with this deal. After that they will contact you with all necessary information about this transaction(terms, buyer protection, payment instructions,invoice,etc.).
P.S. Please don`t forget to send me your full name and address.
P.S. Once i receive your full name and address we can start talking on the phone too, right now i have too many potential buyers and i can`t talk with all of them,i hope you understand.

Third reply when asked to view sled in person and pay cash:
Hi,
I told you before that i`m very busy right now…i just got this new job so i can afford to loose it,i hope you understand. So let`s make it through eBay to skip all that hassle, all you have to do is to send me your full name and address so eBay can complete the invoice onto your name and send it to you by email.Don`t worry in case you won`t like this transaction you can cancel it whenever you want and you will be charged with nothing.
Thanks!

My Dad recently was purchasing a vehicle over the internet. I warned him about it, because you have no idea what is on the other end of that transfer. My grandma died about 2 years ago, and left my Dad her house in which case we sold it, and my Dad pocketed the cash. He was down to his last 22,000 dollars, and had been searching for a newer vehicle the last year and a half. He was always saying, “This is the last vehicle I will ever buy, so I better make a good choice.” Well, he was scammed by a man of the alias Chris Larsen, which is of course a funny name for a man with a heavy accent. My Dad couldn’t tell if he was middle eastern, or Mexican. He lives in Delaware (that’s the only truth) and sends out a large amount of photos in which case you can see his face in the reflection of the rear view mirror in one. He sends a carfax along with it, and even answers his phone.

First, my Dad sent 22,000 and the man called back 2 days later (with the money supposedly sitting at MSN Auto’s) and said that his wife’s lawyer found out that he was selling that Denali for that cheap (my Dad called it a grudge sale, just wanted to get away from the wife in a nasty divorce) and the guy wanted more money out of my Dad. But, what was weird and I warned him about this the whole time (he feels like such a dumba** he says) the guy only wanted an extra 2 thousand dollars. He claimed the lawyer was going to end the sale if he didn’t pay him an extra 2 grand, and he’d call the driver and stop him and make him come back. My Dad got ahold of him 3 days after he was “supposed” to receive the truck, and the guy claimed to be shocked and said he’d call my Dad back after he called to see where the driver was. After that, his phone was busy. This man also claimed to be a freighter pilot, which probably means he smuggles crap in and out of the country.

Well, he said my Dad would have to go through MSN Auto’s so everything is safe. I don’t know how they did it because my Dad went through MSN Auto’s and now has no truck, and 24,000 dollars floating around out there somewhere. Chase Bank is trying to stop it, my parents bank won’t do anything about it, the FBI won’t handle anything under 70 Million (Except at their Internet Crime Complaint Department) and the local police are “looking into it”. I feel so horrible that my Dad got scammed, and now he can’t buy a new vehicle. He’s been driving a 1993 Chevy Silverado 1500 Suburban since 1993. Since then, he’s bought my mother a new car for their anniversary in 2007. He’s bought me a new car when I graduated High School 5 years ago. I feel SO bad that he can’t get himself a truck now because of this person. Everything was completely legit, or so it seemed.

I don’t have the pictures, my Dad does. But, if anyone wants them really bad, I can sure get them from him and send them along. This man has also advertised the same truck about 8 or 9 different times, through out Florida and on Auto Trader. My Dad didn’t see that before hand, because it wasn’t on there until he “purchased” a vehicle. But, he did find the truck. The truck is at a dealership in Delaware. A man (not by the name Chris Larsen, but it was the same guy as described by the picture in the rear view, and his story about a divorce) traded in that exact Denali a while back for a Chevy Cobalt. So, he did have a truck, not his real name, and he sold it to the dealership way before he started this scam.

He made a mention of a point of contact in Denver. I have no idea what that is about, but this guy needs to be kicked, stabbed, beaten, punched, and whacked by everything known to man. Including his Denali. If anyone knows what else I can possibly do about this, email me at MissSketch@gmail.com. This happened oh, I’d say about a week ago. This dealership in Delaware has this guys real information, which our local police plan on getting (at their own pace, and someday.. you know, after the money is completely gone and unable to be frozen) and we live in Utah, so we can’t just drive over there. Although, I am seriously considering it if I cannot find a solution that fits my needs very soon. If this happened to your family, you’d be that mad too.

I asked to see the car and then he posted this “That’s not possible, since today I’m putting myself on a plane to Denmark in order to save what’s left of my business. This current crisis was like a hurricane to me and it’s the reason I’m selling this car so cheap.

In Denmark I have the chance to renegotiate some contracts with some business partners, but I desperately need to cash out my car – that’s why I made specific arrangements with eBay Vehicle Protection Program to handle my sale; the car is placed in their custody and they’ll also be acting like an escrow service for me.

So to be able to test drive and properly inspect the car, we’ll be dealing through them for the safety of both of us. To better understand how the process works, here’s a simple explanation:

- you give me your shipping address so I can start the transaction on eBay VPP and then to use it for shipping;
- they will review and accept our transaction and they will provide you with the payment instructions;
- you will make the payment to eBay VPP;
- they give me the confirmation that they received your payment to them and I will start the shipping;
- you receive the vehicle and inspect it,
- you will tell them that you want to keep the vehicle and only then they will send the money to me.

All car’s documents are in the glove box and you’ll receive them along with the car. eBay will hold the money until the car is delivered to you. You will have 5 business days for inspection. If the car is not like described you will have to ship it back at the end of the 5 business days on my expense and have your money back from eBay VPP.

In order to move forward I will need your full name and shipping address.
eBay will get in touch with you with further details and instructions.

Looking forward to hear from you,
Ben”

I never e-mailed a Ben before- he always signed Carl, and in previous e-mails he said the weekend would be fine to schedule an arrangement to view the car.

I’m posting this where ever I can!

Hello Patrick,
Right now the car is at the DAS ( trucking company) warehouse kept in
a sealed container ready for delivery and since I am not at home right
now a test drive it is not possible. However I do offer an inspection
period prior buying the car if we close the deal trough eBay motors
vehicle purchase protection program. Let me explain you how the eBay
process works.
The process works something like this:
1. You send the requested amount to an eBay motors bank account.
2. eBay will confirm me that you have made the payment.
3. I will ship the car so you can Inspect, test and make a decision if
you will keep it or not.
4. If you will not get exactly the same car that you have viewed in
the ad, and also a clean title you will receive all your money back
from eBay motors.
5. If everything is ok eBay motors will get the approval from you to
release the funds to me.
If you agree with this process please let me know your full name and
address and I will forward the details to eBay motors to set up our
transaction.
Regards,
Marica Maher

Hello,
The 2004 Saab 9-3 Aero is still available.
Exterior Color: Black
Interior Color: Slate Gray
Mileage: 46208
Engine: 4
Clean carfax.
Extended warranty, fully transferable to the new owner. full coverage, covers the
engine transmission. drive axle transfer case water pump electrical and air
conditioning…you can use the warranty at any dealer or any certified mechanic
of your choice. The title is clear, there is nothing to be paid on this car.The tires
are in great condition, and the brakes work well.Has never been in an accident and
needs nothing at this time. The interior of the car is in excellent shape NO cuts, NO
burns, NO stains and is extra clean. All power features work properly.
I want $3,800 for the car and the reason I’m selling for so low is because it’s the
only asset I have that can be turned fast into cash.
Unfortunately, I’m on a business trip right now so I can only sell you the car through
an escrow company.
I can probably pay for shipping but I need your zip code to make sure.
Thank-you,
Michael

…

Hi,
I’m still on the trip, I just have a very tight schedule, but it will clear up a little over the next 2 weeks. I’m in a business with Shell Oil Co.(our truck is contracted out to Shell and Taylor Transport) The car is in Florida, in the shipping warehouse, (is already on the container complete with keys, title, service records and original manuals. I can provide a pre-purchase 150-point inspection report done by a professional inspector and a 5-day inspection period.
In order for both of us to be protected we’ll go through eBay VPP.
- I will need your full name, shipping address and phone# to register you as buyer with them.
-eBay will process the info, and send you the invoice with the transaction details.
- you send the money to eBay. They keep the payment secured in their bank account.
- After they secure your payment, they will instruct me to begin shipping you the car w/ documents. Shipping will take within 24-48 hours.
Once I’ll start the delivery, the shipping company will confirm you the exactly day and hour when the car arrive, you will have the tracking number, so you can check online the status of the delivery.
- You will receive the vehicle with all the documents for a 5-day inspection period. After the inspection period ends, if there are issues with the car, they will send you a full refund within 3 business days. In this case, you will ship the car back to me at my expense.
If all is good with the car, which I’m sure it will, and you want to keep it, you will have to give approval to eBay to release the payment to me.
If we have a deal, please reply with your full name, shipping address and phone # so I can get the ball rolling with eBay.
Thank you,
Michael

Hi,
This is a charity sale, I will donate money to a children’s foundation so that business will be done through eBay, because they organize a lot of work to this end. Right now I’m in a business trip and can not meet to show you the car, but I can send you more pictures and details. I hope it’s good for you. I can arrange the delivery on my expense. I will expect your e-mail.
Thank you

…

As I told you I’m currently in a business trip and I will be back in May this year. Because this is a charity sale a company must be used to make the transaction so I chose to use eBay.This way, you will be able to inspect the vehicle before any money reach me and on the other hand I am sure I have a serious buyer.

Here is how the process works:

- you give me your shipping address so I start the transaction on eBay Motors and then to use it for shipping
- they review and accept our transaction and provide you with the payment instructions,
- you make the payment to eBay Motors VPP,
- they give me the confirmation that they received your payment to them and I start the shipping,
- you receive the vehicle and inspect it,
- you tell them that you want to keep the vehicle and only then they send the money to me.

All car’s documents are in the glovebox and you’ll receive them along with the car. This includes the title, all service records, original manuals and a bill of sale. The title and the bill of sale are signed by me, all you have to do is to put your name on them and the agreed amount on the bill of sale. You will need the full service records so you can transfer the remaining warranty under your name.
eBay Motors will hold the money until the car is delivered to you. You will have 5 business days for inspection. If the car is not like described you will have to ship it back at the end of the 5 business days on my expense and have your money back from eBay Motors VPP. But I am sure this will not be the case and you will love it.

In order to move forward I will need your full name and shipping address.

eBay will get in touch with you with further details and instructions.
Looking forward to hear from you!
